Scrub Daddy Case Study
The request and our approach.
Thanks so much for reaching out about your video project. This project sounds like a fun approach to the age old question of how do we tell potential clients what we do. I love the script and the personality you brought to the Scrub Daddy. We’ve watched a lot of cheesy, fun, tongue-in-cheek videos over the year and would love to help you bring this to life. We are experts at working quickly and nimbly to making sure we capture what you need to tell the story as well as adding in our own unique views/input when we see something on set. We’ve worked a lot with non professional talent, which is really important in a situation like this where we’re asking employees to be in the video. While they don’t have to be super believable (that’s the campy 90’s employee video side), they do need to be super comfortable and we can help them with that. We’ll be able to get the best of their performances and make a fun video that both you and Scrub Daddy will be excited to share.
Logistically for this project, we’d arrive on Sunday the 6th. On Monday the 7th, we’d have a half day scout at Scrub Daddy. Below you’ll find the costs for everything, but if the scout day is scouting and filming, we’d have to charge a full production day. If it’s just scouting, there’s a discounted rate for that. After the scout day, we’ll work together to order the shots so that we can work most efficiently through the day, capturing what we need. Tuesday, the 8th, would be our shoot day and we’d capture all that wonderful 90’s satire. Then we’d head back on Wednesday, the 9th, and have files over to you by Friday the 11th.
Equipment wise, if that is something you’re curious about, we’d be utilizing our Canon C80 shooting 6k RAW light. We have a travel light kit that would give us more than enough coverage. And we’d bring a Canon R5 rigged to have a Scrub Daddy in frame (shooting 8k RAW light) so that we could get some fun pickups like that but also still provide you a clean image without the Scrub Daddy, for editing.
Cost wise, there’s a breakdown below and it includes a few scenarios. On the call yesterday, you guys said you didn’t have a number in mind. If that’s changed please let me know because it helps me gauge production. I have one estimate with 2 shoot days and my assistant traveling out with me. I also have one with one scout day, one shoot day, and no assistant. Take a look and let me know what you think and if we’re in the ballpark. I’d like to finalize a revised estimate after you have a chance to go through the proposal, with your feedback on scout day, assistants, etc.
Deliverables and process.
So what will the project entail…
Pre-production:
We’ll work with you on the script as needed
We’ll make sure we’ve got the right gear for the project
We’ll book our travel
Production:
We’ll arrive on Sunday, April 6th to make sure we’re covered if there’s any issues with travel or checked baggage
Day 01: This is a scout day to look at locations and make sure we’ve got all the right angles. If this turns into a shoot day as well, there would be additional costs outlined in the estimate below.
Day 02: This is the shoot day. Based on the scouting on day 01, we’ll put together a plan of action for shots, locations, and order. We’ll work through things and make sure we get everything captured that needs to be.
Post Production:
For this one, you’ll handle the editing internally.
Final Deliverables:
All RAW footage provided via digital transfer link.
Our work
Here’s some of our work that matches your project…
Our Reel - So I Did
A little about us
It’s important to learn a little bit about who you’re working with before a project starts. We’re not fresh out of college and decided to start doing our own thing. Our founder & Creative Director, Cal Engel has over 20 years experience in the industry. Spanning from traditional marketing agencies to innovation agencies to brands to digital out of home, even working with literally the biggest music acts in the world. Ten years ago he decided to form AV Collective as a way to provide that same high quality work to clients, but without them having to pay the overhead of a traditional agency. Why’s that important for you? Every project is going to have challenges. It’s about the knowledge and expertise of the people you work with, that allows them to overcome those challenges and deliver projects beyond your expectations.
Here’s what a few of our clients have said about us…
“Working with Cal at AV Collective has been a feather in my professional cap. We have created work that changed the way people thought of my company, turning our executives and customers into rock stars. Cal is highly creative; he can put together innovative ideas and concepts independently. Cal is also highly collaborative, so you can bring your ideas (no matter how crazy) with you and he can help bring them to life.”
“Words do not describe how amazing Cal and the team have been to work with. They have helped our agency out on a lot of last minute projects, which have included editing, VO, music and design. The attention to detail and thoughtfulness for each project they have been engaged on has been incredibly refreshing. They take true pride and ownership in each project.”
“From beginning to end, just a world-class experience. I do know that those words get used a lot, world-class, to the point where they don’t mean much but, for me, as someone who has been on countless photo, commercial, and video shoots, knowing every single detail is the difference between a project that moves through ideation to completion smoothly and an experience that is less than ideal for all involved. Working with Cal has been nothing short of spectacular.”
What will it cost?
Below is the budget, there’s two things that are affecting costs. First, there was mention of a scout day that “may have some interview filming”. If there’s filming, that’s great but we bill our creative fee for shooting. If it’s strictly a scout day, we’d bill a lower amount.
Second, we prefer to shoot with our assistant, but I know not every budget allows for everything. So below you’ll find a few “tiers” for lack of a better term of the estimate. I’m happy to provide a revised version if you know which way you want to go with things.
Here’s the estimate with 2 shoot days and an assistant…
PreProduction [Planning] - $750
Production [Filming] - $7,500
with an assistant and 2 shoot days
Travel costs - $4,300
TOTAL - $12,550
Here’s the estimate with 1 shoot day, 1 scout day (no filming) and no assistant…
PreProduction [Planning] - $750
Production [Scouting/Filming] - $5,000
1 scout day, 1 shoot day
This is with no assistant, I’d very much like to find someone local at a minimum but without knowing if it’s a scout/shoot setup or 2 shoot days I can’t finalize that cost yet but it would be about $500.
Travel costs - $2,600
TOTAL - $8,350
Here’s the detailed breakdown of costs with 2 shoot days and the assistant…
